Many people have been asking why RN didn’t respond to the recent Haiti crisis, following Cyclone Matthew.
RN has an Early Warning Office (EWO) which receives alerts from the Glodal Disaster Alert and Coordination System (GDACS). Originally GDACS put out figures of 264 deaths, but the media put out 800 +.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) later released a figure of 473 deaths but figures of 1,000 + deaths where being reported in the media.
However, the latest official OCHA figure is 546 deaths and 438 injured and they gleaned this figure from the governmental Directorate of Civil Protection (CPD) of Haiti. http://www.unocha.org/hurricane-matthew
And it was for this reason plus the fact that the Government didn’t call for an emergency response, that RN didn’t respond.
T’is always great to hear the truth rather than speculation!
